Making soy candles along with other candles is an extremely popular hobby today. More people are using soy wax today because it is an all-natural product. The soy wax is made from soybean hydrogenates oil. Make sure though when buying the soy bean wax that is has had nothing added to it.
While paraffin is still the most used of the candle waxes, soy wax is gaining popularity. One reason for this is that soy wax is also affordable like paraffin is. Another reason is it fairly easy to handle in candle making too.
Soy candles are cleaner to burn and have a nice aroma. The wax made from soy has a lower melt temperature than the paraffin so it takes less time to get ready for pouring. This is a big reason that the paraffin users are changing to the soy-based material.
The method of melting soy wax is not much different from the one used to melt paraffin. It takes less time to melt the soy wax so the process takes less time in fact. Use a double boiler to melt you wax. You can make your own if you don't have a standard one. This is just one pot inside another with hot water in the bottom one. Place the wax in the upper pot to melt it gently so it does not get too hot. The wax needs to be at the right temperature for the candles to come out right.
This soy wax is ready when it is 150 - 170 degrees Fahrenheit. At this point the wax should be placed in your preferred mold at once. Getting the wax too hot could change its color and if you wait the wax may cool to the extent that it will crack in the mold. When you are making scented candles add the scent just before pouring.
Adding scents to the wax should be done very carefully, too much and the candle does not setup good. Too little and the candle will not have enough aroma. To get the right scent add only one ounce or less for every 16 ounces of soy wax being used. Also allow the wax to cool slowly after it is poured. Do not try to refrigerate or us another fast cooling method to set it up. This could make the soy candles develop cracks.
Now paraffin wax is much better for certain shapes of candles like the taper, pillar, and even some of the novelty candles. If you make floating candles with the soy type of wax, do not make them too large.
With using the right method for making them soy candles can be very rewarding. The fact that they are natural appeals to many people along with the pleasant aroma they give the house. These types of wax are also very easy to shape into candles. So you need to check out making these types of candles today to see if they are right for you.
